The South Carolina Cancer Alliance is proud to partner with the Columbia Housing Authority on an impactful initiative, HOPE Within Columbia Housing, focused on increasing awareness of the five screenable cancers and strengthening cancer prevention efforts within local communities.

Through this collaborative effort, we are working directly with residents of the Columbia Housing Authority to provide education, resources, and tools that support early detection and prevention. A key component of this initiative is the development of Cancer Prevention Ambassadors, resident leaders who are trained to take this information back into their communities, engage their neighbors, and serve as trusted voices for health education within their apartment communities.

These ambassadors are passionate, committed, and deeply connected to this work. Many are cancer survivors themselves, bringing powerful personal experiences that strengthen their dedication to raising awareness and helping others take charge of their health.

The program includes quarterly meetings designed to provide ongoing education, support, and leadership development. During our first quarterly meeting, participants focused on breast cancer awareness and learned about the Best Chance Network, with a special presentation from Ms. Gloria Foster of the Department of Public Health Cancer Section. The discussion created a strong and engaging foundation for the work ahead.

Looking forward, participants will continue building their knowledge and leadership skills. In June, the group will participate in a cancer education training led by the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, known as the Move N Up Training, which will further equip ambassadors with the tools needed to effectively share information and support their communities.

This dynamic group continues to inspire us with their passion, leadership, and commitment to cancer prevention. The South Carolina Cancer Alliance is excited about the future of HOPE Within Columbia Housing and the impact it will have as residents lead the charge in creating healthier, more informed communities.

Expanding HOPE Across South Carolina
The South Carolina Cancer Alliance is committed to expanding this initiative beyond the Midlands and into communities statewide. As a statewide organization, we aim to bring this model to housing authorities across all four regions of South Carolina, ensuring that more residents have access to cancer prevention education, trusted messengers, and life-saving resources. We invite housing authorities, community leaders, and partners across the state to join us in this effort. Together, we can empower residents, build local leadership, and create healthier communities across South Carolina.
