Voices of Hope, Strength, and Support

In May 2026, the South Carolina Cancer Alliance partnered with the Kershaw County Library System to host a powerful Survivor Stories event, bringing together community members to hear firsthand accounts of resilience, hope, and healing.
During this special gathering, three breast cancer survivors courageously shared their personal journeys through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. One survivor described her strength by saying, "I'm not just a survivor, I'm a warrior," while another reflected on the urgency of her treatment, sharing, "It was aggressive, so I had to be aggressive."
Another participant spoke candidly about the emotional challenges she faced throughout her cancer journey, explaining, "I didn't want to burden my family, so I would sneak away to doctor's appointments by myself." Her story highlighted the often unseen emotional weight that many individuals carry while navigating cancer.
The event also featured a caregiver perspective shared by a devoted husband who supported his wife throughout her experience. He offered a powerful reminder of what matters most during a cancer journey, stating, "Men don't care about your breast being gone, we just want you here. We need you here." Inspired by his own experience, he went on to create a support group for husbands and male caregivers, helping others navigate the emotional and practical realities of caregiving during treatment and survivorship.
The discussion created an atmosphere of connection, understanding, and encouragement, demonstrating the power of storytelling to foster healing and community. Participants left with renewed inspiration and a greater awareness of the resources and support systems available to both survivors and caregivers.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Eliza Boulware, Dr. Andrea Darden, Jessica Singletary, and Melvin Darden for sharing their experiences so openly. We also thank the Kershaw County Library System for its partnership and for providing a welcoming space to host this meaningful event.
The South Carolina Cancer Alliance remains committed to expanding Survivor Stories events across the state. By elevating the voices of survivors and caregivers, we aim to ensure that individuals and families impacted by cancer have access to the support, resources, and community they need throughout every stage of the cancer journey.
