2017-2018 Priority Counties: Bamberg, Darlington, and Williamsburg

In contrast to urban areas, rural counties in South Carolina experience significantly higher cancer incidences, cancer mortality, and smoking rates. Fortunately, there are screening tests to help detect many cancers (i.e. breast, cervical/HPV, colorectal, head and neck, lung, and prostate cancer).  However, due to many factors such as access to care, public education, and awareness of resources, these cancers tend to go undiagnosed until they are in late-stage, which is the deadliest.

The Alliance is working to implement a Rural Health Initiative (RHI) to link individuals with a health care provider located in their community who will provide or refer the individuals to appropriate screening services. The Alliance will work with local community leaders to ensure the appropriate government officials, health care professionals, and faith-based organizations are involved and engaged in these efforts. We will develop a customized approach to address the cancer burden in each community.
